A native of New Brunswick, Mrs. Carolyn Steeves received a Bachelor of Music and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario. Her principal piano teachers were Damjana Bratuz, Marie Johnson and Ronald Turini. She later completed a Masters in Music at the University of Calgary specializing in Kodály Education with Lois Choksy. Mrs. Steeves has served on the boards of the Alberta Choral Federation, the Alberta Kodály Association and the Kodály Society of Canada. She has been instrumental in organizing Choral and Kodály conferences at the Provincial, National and International level.
Mrs. Steeves maintains a very active Piano Studio including an increasing number of online students. Her students, who range from preschool to adult and from beginner to the ARCT level, have won awards at the Local, Provincial and National level. She has had five students in the Academy Program for Young Artists at the Mount Royal University Conservatory in Calgary.
From 2018 - 2020, Mrs. Steeves taught Keyboards for Kids, a program sponsored by the Alberta Music Education Foundation, at École Brentwood Elementary School. The goal of the program is to provide free piano instruction to interested, at-risk or disadvantaged youth and to enhance personal characteristics such as self-esteem, creativity and personal expression.
She is a member of the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers' Association, the Alberta Registered Music Teacher’s Association (Calgary Branch), the Alberta Piano Teacher’s Association, the Alberta Music Education Foundation, Choir Alberta, the Alberta Kodály Association, the Kodály Society of Canada and is a Royal Conservatory of Music RCM Advanced Certified Teacher.
On July 21, 2022, Mrs. Steeves was recognized with an Alberta Northern Lights Award for her commitment to the Arts in Strathmore and for giving back to her community. On February 27th, 2021, she was honoured with a prestigious Choir Alberta 2020 Award of Distinction, the Patricia Cook Memorial Award. Presented annually to a person, choir, institution, program or corporation, the award recognizes exemplary commitment to music education in schools and the wider community. She has also been awarded Steinway & Sons Top Teacher Awards in 2016, 2019 and 2020 for outstanding instruction and leadership in piano and music education.
Mrs. Steeves is a Minister of Music at Strathmore United Church and a Founder and Artistic Director of Strathmore United Church’s Concert Series, Arts on 817, founded in 2017. She was a Founder of the Strathmore Performing Arts Festival in 2018, President until June 2022 and is currently Past President. She is currently Chair of The Vault Cultural Collective, an Arts and Culture Hub in Strathmore, founded in 2021. She has served as a Director, 2021-23, and is currently Vice-President of the Alberta Music Festival Association. She is also a Member at Large with the Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association (Calgary Branch) since 2021 and is the Calgary Representative and Festival Liaison Convenor on the Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association Provincial Board.
Mrs. Carolyn Steeves was the Music Specialist at École Brentwood Elementary School from 1980 - 2020. She was also a facilitator for the Fine Arts Collaborative for the Golden Hills School Division. Mrs. Steeves strongly believed and promoted the importance of the Fine Arts in elementary education. During her teaching career, École Brentwood Elementary School gained a reputation for its extensive, inclusive and high quality Choral and Fine Arts programming, Musical Theatre productions and school wide concerts. The music program at Brentwood Elementary School received many accolades and honours over the years. Highlights included Brentwood’s participation in the mass choir at the Opening Ceremonies of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary and the Senior Choir's two invitations to perform with the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra at Hope Covenant Church in Strathmore and at the Alberta Children’s Choir South Gala Concert at Knox United Church in Calgary in 2017.
Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Steeves was an avid athlete. She swam competitively for many years and lifeguarded for seven summers. Her favourite teachers were Mr. Edwards, her high school music teacher and Miss Muriel McIntyre, her childhood piano teacher. Mrs. Steeves’ favourite season is summer and she loves to travel! Mrs. Steeves is the proud mother of four very musical children, one of which is a musical Dr. Steeves!
